The August passenger counts from McCarran International Airport are out. The total volume of arriving and departing passengers was 4,306,334 – an increase of 1.5% from August 2017. For the year to date, traffic was up 2.7% over the same period last year.
Passenger growth was largely driven by international carriers, which saw a 6.9% increase over August of last year while domestic passengers rose by just 0.8% over the year. After a 2017 marked by declines, international traffic is recovering in 2018, up 5.6% for the year to date.
The top domestic carriers saw a wide range of change in passenger volume. Despite a 14.1% increase over the year, United remains in 5th place as Spirit marks another month of major growth: 23.5% in August. American remains in danger of losing its 3rd-place position with an 8.1% decline in traffic, and after months of relatively flat growth Southwest posted a 2.3% decrease in passengers. Delta remains on track for moderate growth with 5.2% more passengers arriving and departing in August.
